People watching. The good. The bad. The awesome.

I've continued jotting down some of the interesting things I've seen since writing the first "people watching" post. Just like I mentioned last time... Every day I am reminded of just how wonderful many strangers are around me. I am given examples that I am able to learn from and live up to. I’m also reminded just how far we have to go. MADE ME HAPPY: I was in bed sick the morning after a big snow storm. I finally found the energy to get up and get ready to go shovel the driveway, something that can't be skipped since I have renters that live in my basement. When I went outside, my driveway was already cleaned off and my walks were bare thanks to the awesomeness of the teenage boys who live across the street. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: Some different teenagers hocked a big, nasty loogie on my front window, high enough that I can't reach it to clean it off. MADE...

This is beautiful you

Finally, my favorite post of the week! Every Sunday I take some of the photos that you have uploaded to the Facebook wall, and I post them here. I love This is Beautiful You because it gives me (and everybody else) an incredible glimpse of who we all are. It puts a face on the awesome people coming here. It gives us a beautiful idea of the uniqueness and diversity of the followers here at SDL. More than anything, it shows all of us just how beautiful we each can be. Anyway, thank you for sharing a small part of yourselves. It's my honor to put the spotlight on you today. This is beautiful you. Which photos made you the happiest today? If you'd like to send in photos to be considered for Sunday's "This is beautiful you" and other future blog posts, please post them on the Facebook wall (we need lots more!). Sorry, emailed photos will not be considered. Only upload photos...

Lame Dreams

I would like to lodge an official complaint with The Sandman.I woke up this morning after having stewed through an extremely long dream. I generally love dreaming, but come on... A dream about my dog pooping all over the house and my arduous quest to clean it up? Surely my brain is capable of much more satisfying and elaborate schemes.I really hate dreaming about things that are mundane and everyday. I find myself cleaning up dog poop in the house at least once or twice a week because B.B. hates walking through the snow. I can't say I blame him, sometimes it's as deep as he is tall.Anyway, I really hate cleaning up his poop in real life, so why live through it again? Does my brain hate me? Do I feel some need to punish myself?A couple weeks ago I dreamed all night long that I was writing blog posts. While I thoroughly enjoy doing it when fully...

My Mad Wrinkle

The other morning I was jolted awake, my beauty rest carelessly interrupted as 33 lbs. of four-year-old came barreling down on top of me, knee-first into my sternum. "It's daytime!" Noah screeched. It was far too early and Noah was far too chipper. As I lay rubbing my chest, I tried to explain to Noah that he couldn't jump on Daddy like that. "It hurts, and it makes it hard to breathe," I told him. He just smirked and rose to his feet once again, ready to inflict pain to his dad once more. "Noah, don't jump. That hurts me when you do that. I love to wrestle with you, but sometimes we shouldn't be so rough. Especially when I'm asleep." "Daddy, can we make toast and then put some eggs on it?" he replied. I groaned. "Noah did you listen to what I said?" He only collapsed into my lap and pointed to my forehead. "Dad, is that your mad wrinkle?" "What are you talking...

Kids Uncensored

A little while back, I asked you on Twitter and Facebook "what is the funniest thing you've ever heard a kid say?" Here are your responses, uncensored and unedited, all just as innocent as the children who said them! More than 900 responses came in. Plenty to last us for at least a "few" yearsposts here on Single Dad Laughing. A kindergartner told me that her grandma was a magician for a living. I asked about it and she said "Yes, she started because of the eyes in the back of her head and has been into magic ever since." She was wide-eyed and dead serious. "I almost died. Next time, I'll hold it." "Mommy, you have big pimples and I have little pimples" my son said as he pointed to his chest. Girl: "My daddy's an underwriter." Me: Oh yes? And what does an underwriter do? girl: *shrugs* "He writes on unders?" (underwear) When my 3-year old described the election as "a brown Daddy and...

Noah Turns Four

Well, it's over and done with. My three year old son is officially on his way to five. He woke me up much earlier than usual this morning, which was unpleasantly surprising since his cousins slept over and he stayed up much later than usual last night. When I was eventually able to gain some amount of coherency, I told him Happy Birthday and reminded him that he was officially four today. This is the face Noah gave me when I asked him to smile and show off his birthday cake for the camera. He lifted his arms toward me and asked, "are my hands bigger?" I couldn't help but laugh as I told him they were definitely much bigger today. He then asked, "am I a lot taller now?" I assured him he was, and he replied, "I like being four."Gosh... four years old. What happened to those first years of his life? Where did they go? It's as if David...

International Act Like a 4-Year-Old Day

It's Noah's birthday. He turns four today, and as I contemplate just how incredible and special a human being he is, I can't help but think that I should do something special to honor his awesomeness.

The Candy Land Showdown

Santa brought Noah both the Candy Land and Chutes & Ladders board games for Christmas last year. They've remained buried in our game closet, unopened and untouched since then. Jigsaw puzzles have been his poison of choice, and so every other game has sat gathering dust. On Wednesday, he came trotting into my tiny and pathetic computer nook home office, Candy Land in tow. He asked me if we could play, declaring that he was now tired of puzzles. I really needed a break anyway, so we sat down at the kitchen table and opened 'er up. We played no less than three hundred games of Candy Land, every one of them sprinkling nostalgic dust all over me in an attempt to counteract how tedious it was to repeatedly play the same game over and over. We finally put the game away, and Noah asked if we could play it again the next day. Not knowing if I could choke down...

Lion King Like You’ve Never Experienced It Before

I have this theory that everybody has their own version of that song in Lion King. Just watch the video. I went around and gathered people's personal versions and the result was epic.

91 Mutual Friends

Here's something I quite honestly can't wrap my brain around. There is this girl on Facebook. She keeps popping up all over the place, and Facebook keeps recommending that I add her as a friend. Get this... we have 91 mutual friends. Yeah, you heard me right. NINETY-ONE.Problem is, I have no idea who the heck she is. She's never added me as a friend, and I've never added her as a friend. Apparently we know all the same people, yet neither one of us know each other. She's friends with several of my friends from high school. She's friends with some of my college friends (which was four hours away). She's friends with some of my family members. She's friends with some of my old work colleagues. And yet... we have yet to cross paths.Maybe she just adds everybody, would be my first thought, and in fact it was. But she only has 459 friends, so that can't be it. Maybe you have met her...

Noah’s Valentine’s Day Cards

On Friday, I dropped Noah off at pre-school armed with his first homemade Valentine's Day lovebox, along with a plethora of awesomeness to hand out to the other kids in his class. It was to be his first real experience in the crazy world of love, and we made sure to do it in style. When I picked Noah up from school the day before, I asked him if he wanted to go to the store and choose some Valentine's Day cards or if he'd rather go home and make his own cards with a funny picture of him on the front. Since making "funny pictures" together is one of our favorite things to do, he didn't have to think twice. He declared that he wanted to hand out cards that had his face on them. And that's how every kid in his class ended up with this in their loveboxes: We had a lot of fun making his Valentine's Day Cards....
