See this? It’s called an Apple Pear.

Yep, it’s a new hybrid fruit that’s half apple, half pear.

I found ‘em at Costco, which means I had to buy a whole bunch of ‘em just to see what they were like. I won’t lie, I thought they would rock my world.

But, not even close…

As it turns out, there’s a reason why these forbidden fruits didn’t evolve on their own. They’re just not very good at all.

Now, if the super-scientists ever want to make kiwi/strawberry hybrids, I’d be all over that!

Dan Pearce, Single Dad Laughing

PS. Have you tried apple pears? What was your opinion? If you haven’t, do they sound good to you?

I'm thinking the ones I have aren't quite ripe yet.  I'm gonna give them a few days on the counter.  See if they get sweeter.  I had one yesterday, though, and agree with Jayne - kind of sweet jicama.  Not very appealing as is.

Dude, you've been had.  The only things apple about this fruit are its shape and colloquial name.  It is a pear through-and-through, no apple genes at all.  I like them okay, but would probably research a little better before releasing the review to the public.

eating one now - takes like kind of sweet jicama - yuck!

Found your post after searching the net to figure out what the heck I was eating!

Not for me - now plucots - that's an entirely different story :-)

I was totally surprised to find a whole tree of those things growing at my new house.  I thought they were apples, but not so!  I am determined to find them amazing and delicious since I now have as many as I can eat.  Figuring out when they're ripe can be tricky but makes all the difference. The paper bag trick helps (with a lot of fruits, actually).  And I like the sauce idea.  I may totally do that this year 'cause it looks like we're going to have a great harvest :)

I have no idea how to spell it, but they're Asian Pears, or "sah-lee" and they are delicious when they're ripe.  They'll get a little soft when they're ripe, but they're crisp like apples, with the texture and juice of a pear (ever so slightly mealy).  I've always eaten them peeled and then cut up into apple slices.

Yup, Asian Pears.  The ones you had just weren't ripe, that's all.  If you had a tree ripened one, you would probably like it a lot.

We've had them in Australia for years, usually called a Nashi. You need to wait until they are ripe and if you bought them from Costco, I'm guessing they weren't yet ready. Wait until they are almost as soft as pear should be, not hard like an apple.

Seeing how I am alergic to both apples and pears, an apple pear sounds like extra strength death by anaphilactic shock. I'll pass

Now you must try Grapples!!!! I thought they were delicious... except ii'm on this No GMO eating streak...

They're not a hybrid fruit, just a type of pear. Asian pears. Been around for a looooooong time.

I bought 'grapples'. Grape tasting apples? What could go wrong right? It turns out a lot can go wrong there.

Yep, I too was sucked in by them at Costco....and I am not a fan.

well, since we're all giving you our advice... :) if you have a large quantity and don't like them...you could turn them into apple/pear sauce, adding a little sugar if necessary...i do that or make pie whenever i have fruit (namely apples) that are no good on their own.  I've gathered from your other posts that your not much for cooking so just know that all you have to do for applesauce is peel and chop the apples and let it cook on low heat for a while, till it mushes down to desired consistancy. good luck! :)

Yep, in Australia we call them Nashi and they have been around for ages... I love them, my husband hates them, but he hates all "squishy" and juicy fruits.....

Just like regular pears, you have to make sure they are ripe before you eat them.  I won't eat D'Anjuo pears unless they are turning yellow.

yeah, those are asian pears and I like them! Guess you just got a bad batch. If I tried strawberries the first time from the grocery store I would think they were disgusting too! Thank God I live in California where you can literally walk down the street and buy real fresh grown strawberries (for like $1/lb) when they are in season! Never base a fruit on its grocery store variety. Or at least try it at a different time of year, I wouldn't imagine they are in season at least apples aren't, and since they are half apple, I assume they would be around the same time?

Also known as a Nashi (or Nashi Pear)? They are very popular in New Zealand and delicious. Much better straight off the tree or from a farmers market, I wouldn't purchase one from a supermarket here :)

I dont care for them, but, with that being said, they very rarely are super sweet/juicy unless you get it right off the farm. They grow them where I grew up in California and were amazingly sweet. I just didnt like the texture.

If they are not perfectly ripe as they so often are in box stores then you are soooooooo missing out. But never eat really close to the core as it can be sour. They are usually do juicy it runs down my arm. Mmmmmm

I LOVE them.  What's wrong with your taste buds, Dan?  They are juicy and gritty like a pear but have an appleish crunch as well.  Yum!

I LOVE apple pears! Though I call them Asian pears. You must've gotten a bad batch or something. They're supposed to be crisp and juicy like an apple, but taste more like a pear.

Can you imagine if someone formed a lifelong opinion about all apples based on an out of season, overstored, factory farmed, floury and dry batch of apples? If it is indeed a Nashi, either you have a bad Nashi, or your sense of taste is irredeemably incorrect :)

Looks like a Nashi pear. (the name they use in New Zealand). If it's what I think it is. They have a distinctive taste. A bit like perfume. :-) Not too bad though really. Just different.

apple pears are a little blah, but you must try the kiwi grapes!!

That's an Asian pear, and I don't like the ones that you would buy in a super market. Now if you have an opportunity to buy them from a farmer's market - jump at that chance. They are amazing! They should be smaller (about the size of a plum). They're very sweet and flavorful when they're grown right. My family had a tree when I was growing up and Asian pear season was the best!!! That is the best snack in the world!

You have to let them sit for a couple of days before you eat them.  Then....nirvana!

@PaulMaxcy I was just going to say that!  Put them in a paperbag and wait until they are a little soft, otherwise they are blah and too crunchy

KimmieL
KimmieL

Make sure that they are REALLY ripe.  If they are crunchy, they are not good, but once they are soft, they are really good.  Try letting them sit for a few days, they should be soft like some pears are better really soft.

MezzoJenn

@KimmieL I like them crispy! :) Really, just avoid buying them from places like Costco

I didn't know they were Asian, but Asians do have the best food :) that's all I would eat as a kid. Ahhhh Dan, your missing out mate :)

Asian pears rock when they're ripe and fresh. All the yummyness of a pear, without the juice sliding down your wrists!

i was gonna say that is an Asian Pear :) but its been pointed out...while they are not my favorite either...my mother in law always buys them (shes Korean) kids love them though...she gets hers from the Asian Market

Know them as "asian pears" as well. Shame on them for passing themselves as something they're not in their profile. Try them as a crunchy element in a salad, they are great in baked tarts.

@Allegra actually we eat them as they are in Asia. We never cook them. @Kate agreed! I grew up with the fruit and it's one of my favorites :)

To use up the rest Dan, try slicing them and sauteeing with a bit of butter, sugar and either lemon or cinnamon. Serve em over dutch babies or pancakes.

I commented on the blog itself, but I'll comment here as well. This isn't a hybrid fruit at all. Mainly known as the Asian Pear grown in China, Japan, and Korea. It's one of my favorite fruits, but I would never buy them from Costco or other big American chain markets as they won't have any flavor. The only place to get them is at Asian markets!

Yeah thats totally an asian pear...not a hybrid fruit.

These are actually not an apple/pear hybrid, they are just referred to as apple pears sometimes. I agree to let them ripen a bit and try again. I do not like the skin, but the flesh is delicious if ripe.

In Australia, we call them nashy pears. Bloody beautiful :) I'll have em

Hint for those living in UT.  (Dan, you need to remember this)  Go to any Harmons.  They have the best produce you can get outside of a farmers market here.  Talk to someone in the produce department and tell them that you want to try a certain fruit before you buy it.  They will cut it up for you and you are not obligated to buy a thing.  Also works when you need help knowing if that watermelon is just right.

Allegra Waggener
Allegra Waggener

And I agree, it looks like an asian pear, which is not a hybrid and has been around forever. There's a reason they're usually used for cooking in asia.
