I went out at 1 AM and shot a few more pictures of the Quail Fire on East Mountain. Then I went out at 4 AM and shot the brunt of these.
Thankfully the fire has been very slow moving during the night, I’m sure thanks to the efforts of so many during the day. I’m going to bed.
- A closeup of the fire as it crawls down toward the homes below.
- As the moon got further away, the mountains darkened beneath the stars.
- Using an extremely slow shutter speed, low ISO, and a large aperture, I was able to capture the beauty of the smoke even in near darkness.
- The moon was nearly full tonight. Somehow it looked out of place on a night like this.
- North Mountain (adjacent to the burning East Mountain) sits peacefully beneath the stars as chaos continues so close.
- Using an extremely slow shutter speed, low ISO, and a large aperture, I was able to capture the beauty of the smoke even in near darkness.
- The fire heads further South threatening more homes in Alpine.
- Emergency workers shine bright spotlights onto the mountain as they station themselves around a home below.

PS. You can view a lot more photos of this fire by visiting my personal Facebook page (different than my SDL page) where I’ve posted them all and made them public.
PPS. There’s another post that I scheduled for Independence Day going up in a few hours. I’ll update you on the fire later on, maybe tomorrow. Depends what happens the rest of the day.

I hope the fire stays a very far distance from you and Noah and all your loved ones. I hope you'll keep us posted.
Adam, you may want to do check your computer for a virus or malware.
Those are great pictures! Thanks for sharing them. Hopefully those great firefighters can get that thing under control and soon.
Dan,
Check out my two time lapse videos one was from last night. Both taken from the top of Cemetery Hill

and this clip of the flames racing up east mountain.

@AndrewSmith1 All of those are awesome. I really like the nighttime night lapse one!!!
Adam, there shouldn't be any half-page ads. Would you mind clicking on one and sending me the link it sends you to so that I can report it? Sometimes companies sneak them into their ad code. It's very annoying.
I would love to see them but I'm not able to because of the half page ads that are taking up the screen, dimming your content, and have no exit option, they also won't go away on their own.
my husband is a wildfire firefighter. what they do is heroic. :) beautiful photos.
@AlysiaSmithCarew Your husband is quite a hero, AlysiaSmithCarew!! He is owed so very much for his heroism....thank you so much for your courage!! :)
Dan, horrifyingly gorgeous pictures! You are very, very talented with the lens!
@CindyF Now you're making me blush. ;)
It looks like lava flowing down the mountain. This morning our home is still unaffected. Stuck back to get dog food, toothbrushes and special pillow.
Those are beautiful pictures, and terrifying. I didn't realize you lived in Utah? I'm about an hour or so north of this.
Amazing photos, Dan. The fires depend a lot on wind. It looks like the wind is/was blowing AWAY from the houses. Just in case, you may want to put that sprinkler up on the roof. Things can change pretty fast with these fires. Let's hope the wind quiets down, and some rain come your way.
