Arrested teenager

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.” ~Philo of Alexandria

We’re running this a day late this week since yesterday was my little man’s birthday…

After 21 years of self-destructive inner-battles, I finally admitted my biggest secret to myself and to the rest of the world. That day, and the day my son was born, were the two most incredible and wonderful days of my life.

Here on Single Dad Laughing, I started what I call “The Truth Box.” I asked you all to anonymously share a difficult secret that you’ve never told anyone. There were only two sections to fill out on the form. “What everyone thinks is true,” and “what actually is true.” More than five thousand secrets were shared. Every Thursday I share 60 of them here. Completely random and as they came in.

These truths aren’t meant to entertain. They aren’t meant to bring us down, either. They’re just an incredible and poignant (though sometimes heavy) reminder that we all are fighting our own great battles.

Pulled from the Truth Box: Week 9

1
What everyone thinks is true:
I smoked too much weed and now I am stupid.
What actually is true:
I like that nobody expects anything from me anymore. I used to feel so much pressure.
2
What everyone thinks is true:
I love turquoise and can’t get enough of it.
What actually is true:
I used to. Now I hate it but I’ve spent so many years collecting it, and making people gifts with it, and talking about it that I am stuck in a life of turquoise. I want out!
3
What everyone thinks is true:
I am 29.
What actually is true:
I am 25, but I feel like I won’t get respect at work if anyone thinks I’m a boss and so much younger than they are.
4
What everyone thinks is true:
I live a purposeful life and make thoughtful decisions.
What actually is true:
I have no idea what I am doing, and fell into most of the things I have in my life by accident. I am scared, feel like I’m failing, and have no direction.
5
What everyone thinks is true:
I am a strong, faithful wife and mother.
What actually is true:
I am bipolar and have cheated on my husband 4x in 6 years.
6
What everyone thinks is true:
I was the student body president and I was always popular in high school.
What actually is true:
I was a serious loser in high school with no friends and I moved away to college and invented a past that wasn’t real. People believed it so I’ve rolled with it ever since.
7
What everyone thinks is true:
I have had a rose-colored life.
What actually is true:
My dad went to prison for trying to kill his kids and I was kicked out at 14 to raise myself.
8
What everyone thinks is true:
I’m a straight gay rights activist.
What actually is true:
I’m bisexual, but since I’ve never had the opportunity to date a girl I like, I’ve never felt the need to correct them, even my 2 best friends who know everything else about me.
9
What everyone thinks is true:
I am just your average Joe.
What actually is true:
I spend most of my weekends in chat rooms pretending to be a pretty woman because I’m addicted to it.
10
What everyone thinks is true:
I’m logical, strong, and everybody’s rock of solace.
What actually is true:
I envy their ability to feel freely, trust others, and believe in something without proof. I’m emotionally weak.
11
What everyone thinks is true:
I am the child that didn’t go astray and held tight to my mom and dad’s teachings.
What actually is true:
I feel so much pressure from my parents to be perfect and to live their beliefs that I know I will never be able to be honest about it until they are dead.
12
What everyone thinks is true:
I am helping my boyfriend cope with his mother’s death.
What actually is true:
He takes so much out on me that I desperately want to run away.
13
What everyone thinks is true:
I had breast cancer and only needed surgery.
What actually is true:
I never went to the oncologist because I didn’t want to go thru the illness of the treatments like my mom did. I don’t want to know if I get cancer again. ever.
14
What everyone thinks is true:
I got pregnant while on birth control with both my children.
What actually is true:
I wanted a babie and stopped talking my birth control. I don’t regret it for one minute.
15
What everyone thinks is true:
I’m heterosexual and am looking forward to having my first sexual experience with my husband.
What actually is true:
I masturbate, and am into BDSM and feel confused about my sexuality, but can’t explore it because I’m a virgin and have to stay that way till I’m married because of my religion.
