Truth Box

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.” ~Philo of Alexandria

After 21 years of self-destructive inner-battles, I finally admitted my biggest secret to myself and to the rest of the world. That day, and the day my son was born, were the two most incredible and wonderful days of my life.

Here on Single Dad Laughing, I started what I call “The Truth Box.” I asked you all to anonymously share a difficult secret that you’ve never told anyone. There were only two sections to fill out on the form. “What everyone thinks is true,” and “what actually is true.” More than six thousand secrets were shared. Every Thursday I try and share 60 of them here. Completely random and exactly as they came in.

These truths aren’t meant to entertain. They aren’t meant to bring us down, either. They’re just an incredible and poignant (though sometimes heavy) reminder that we all are fighting our own great battles.

Pulled from the Truth Box: Week 12

1
What everyone thinks is true:
My parents are hardworking people who adopted me out of the kindness of their hearts and raised me to be the person I am today.
What actually is true:
My parents adopted me because I was thrown on their doorstep at six and had no where else to go. They physically and verbally abused me for years. They taught me real hate.
2
What everyone thinks is true:
That I’m dealing with anxiety and depression in a healthy way.
What actually is true:
I’m a functional alcoholic.
3
What everyone thinks is true:
I beat cancer and moved away to follow my dreams!
What actually is true:
I am dying. I moved away so that no one I love would have to be burdened by me.
4
What everyone thinks is true:
I am a good woman.
What actually is true:
Sometimes I fling dog crap into my neighbor’s backyard at night because I can’t stand them.
5
What everyone thinks is true:
I am away at college studying to become a nurse.
What actually is true:
I got kicked out of college more than 18 months ago.
6
What everyone thinks is true:
I’m over my addictions and dependencies.
What actually is true:
I fell back into my porn addiction about six months ago and the only reason I haven’t cut in a while is that last time it had no effect and I’m dead scared that will happen again.
7
What everyone thinks is true:
I abandoned my daughter to move out of state with my boyfriend on a whim.
What actually is true:
I moved out of state with my boyfriend(now husband), but it’s my ex who has been willfully preventing me from speaking to or seeing her.
8
What everyone thinks is true:
I have a lot of money.
What actually is true:
I don’t have any money and am too ashamed to tell people otherwise.
9
What everyone thinks is true:
That I don’t like to be touched or hugged because I’m "cold and detached."
What actually is true:
I was molested by a family member when I was 3-4yrs and people touching me freak me out sometimes!
10
What everyone thinks is true:
I’ve graduated, got my degree, and am ready to start my new career.
What actually is true:
I’ve been a stay at home Mom for 8 years and I’m scared to death to go back to work. I feel I’m not good enough or as creative as I need to be for this profession.
11
What everyone thinks is true:
I love my special needs stepdaughter and am very upset we lost our bid for her to live with us and get out of an abusive environment with her other parent.
What actually is true:
I cannot STAND her and wish I never had to see her again. She hurt my biological daughter and I can never – and will never – forgive her for it.
12
What everyone thinks is true:
That I love him and want to marry him.
What actually is true:
That I love him, but I realize I don’t remember why… But I can’t break the heart of my best friend, so I’ll end up marrying him anyhow. I just want to escape, but it’s too late.
13
What everyone thinks is true:
My parents love each other and we have a nice family.
What actually is true:
My mom cheated on my dad several times and my dad told me all about it (I was 16). 7 years later, he cheated on my mom with my friend. I hate that he did that to me.
14
What everyone thinks is true:
Ive got a happy life.
What actually is true:
My husband is emotionally abusive and every day I want to jump out from a speeding vehicle.
15
What everyone thinks is true:
