At least once each week I get sucked into something completely random on Google. And… I don’t get any work done. So, instead of letting that time go to waste, I decided I might as well share whatever randomness it was that sucked part of my life away.
This week, steampunk.
I went on a ride with my cousin Glen last week. He met me at my apartment, and since I was currently trapped in the loo when he got there, I told him to come on in.
When I emerged, I was met by the weirdest get-up I’ve ever seen, and this is coming from a guy who wears kilts just because he thinks they’re more comfortable and airy.
He had on a tall homemade leather top hat that was beyond unique. He wore leather pants and a homemade leather vest with tin shoulder plates. Attached to his face was some crazy homemade googles and a leather face mask.
“Ummm…” was all I could say. He started to laugh. Finally I eeked out, “cool riding gear.”
To be honest I thought it was ridiculous.
But then we went riding, and we stopped at a gas station, and at every light I looked at him, and the more I took in his homemade awesomeness, the more I thought it was, well, awesome. Maybe not something I’d wear while riding Delilah, but awesome nonetheless.
He told me it was called steampunk and he said it was HUGE everywhere, except maybe Utah.
I came home and posted this picture of us and asked if it was actually a popular style (I accidentally called it steamboat punk, a mistake quickly corrected by just about everyone), and I was more than fascinated when LOTS of people emphatically said YES!
And that’s when Google got me this week. For at least two hours, maybe five, I got sucked in. And this is what I found.
But first, check out my cousin’s homemade leather and steampunk stuff. Pretty cool if you’re into that type of thing.
Anyway, steampunk apparently isn’t just a style, but a “sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery.”
It’s way more than just clothing. Though the clothing is pretty danged amazing. Just look at some of this.
Yes, it’s way more than clothing. Way more than fancy hats, dresses, vests, suits, and other outfits.
