“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.” ~Philo of Alexandria

After 21 years of self-destructive inner-battles, I finally admitted my biggest secret to myself and to the rest of the world. That day, and the day my son was born, were the two most incredible and wonderful days of my life.

Here on Single Dad Laughing, I started what I call “The Truth Box.” I asked you all to anonymously share a difficult secret that you’ve never told anyone. There were only two sections to fill out on the form. “What everyone thinks is true,” and “what actually is true.” More than six thousand secrets were shared. Every Thursday I try and share 60 of them here. Completely random and exactly as they came in.

These truths aren’t meant to entertain. They aren’t meant to bring us down, either. They’re just an incredible and poignant (though sometimes heavy) reminder that we all are fighting our own great battles.

Pulled from the Truth Box: Week 28

1
What everyone thinks is true:
I got out of the military to get a college degree.
What actually is true:
I got out because I was lonely and couldnt hold a relationship. Now im more alone.
2
What everyone thinks is true:
I always talk about my religion because I believe in it and love it so much.
What actually is true:
I always talk about it because I don’t actually believe it and I’m trying hard to.
3
What everyone thinks is true:
That I don’t want people to hang out at my place because it’s so small.
What actually is true:
I’m a slob. Sure, I have excuses, but the bottom line is that it’s a disaster in here and I don’t pick up well.
4
What everyone thinks is true:
I am single, loving life, and ready to find a job somewhere else and leave this town.
What actually is true:
Yes I am loving life, because I’m falling hard for someone. He’s married. I don’t want to leave this town because I’d be further away from him.
5
What everyone thinks is true:
I’m not materialistic and am happy with the eco-conscious ring I asked for.
What actually is true:
I loved it at first but I find myself wanting something big and blingy. I feel really guilty.
6
What everyone thinks is true:
I’m a happy single mom doing what i can to make a good life for us & im not bitter about my ex at all.
What actually is true:
I hate my life i feel like a failure as a human because i had a baby out of wed lock. I hope that fat f*** suffocates his gf during sex and kills himself.
7
What everyone thinks is true:
That I’m kind of slutty.
What actually is true:
I hate one night stands. But sometimes I need someone to distract me from knowing that the man I love doesn’t love me back. At least not in the same way.
8
What everyone thinks is true:
That I’m a faithful wife and only have eyes for him.
What actually is true:
I really do only want him but I cheated and got an STD. I lied and got antibiotics from my doc and Planned Parenthood and tricked him into taking them.
9
What everyone thinks is true:
That I’m just being lazy about getting my drivers license.
What actually is true:
I constantly have nightmares about car wrecks and am terrified that I will be the cause of one and injure someone I love.
10
What everyone thinks is true:
I’m in love with my husband.
What actually is true:
While I AM in love with my husband, I also have very strong feelings for a much younger guy, who flirts with me constantly. Nothing will ever happen, but I enjoy the attention.
11
What everyone thinks is true:
I’m happily living with my boyfriend, and I’m head over heals for him.
What actually is true:
While I think he is attractive, and I love him more than I can say, I actually like women, and am having a hard time making sense of my love for him/attraction to women.
12
What everyone thinks is true:
I am a strong, independent woman that pays her own bills and can handle it all!
What actually is true:
I have borrowed money from a best friend for years now, been too depressed and lazy to get a job, and he thinks I’m in love with him. I was, but I’m not anymore.
13
What everyone thinks is true:
That my husband drank himself to death because I left him for another man.
What actually is true:
That he had been cheating on me for years with men and women and was scared to admit he was really gay.
14
What everyone thinks is true:
That I am strong and independent and I don’t need anyone
What actually is true:
I can be the loneliness person in a room full of people. I will never have anyone I can trust or count on completely!
15
What everyone thinks is true:
That I am a happily adjusted woman.
What actually is true:
After being molested at age 7 I became sexually aware and have struggled with masturbation ever since, off and on.
