Two and a half months ago, I started the Single Dad Laughing Health Club on Facebook. I had no idea that in such a short time, it would save so many people in so many ways.

There are about six thousand of us in the group now. When I launched it, I was hoping for a few hundred at least. I also was just hoping for nothing more than a fun and uplifting place where we could share workout selfies and encourage each other in our quest to be healthy. In a million years, I couldn’t have imagined it becoming what it has become.

Today I am not writing to recruit new members. Numbers aren’t why I created the group. They never were. They never will be.

No, I take that back. At least the numbers part.

It’s all about the numbers.

It’s about the number one.

It’s about the one woman who lurked in the background of the group for seven weeks, then finally confessed that she hadn’t exercised once in over twelve years. With eyes clamped and a look that said kill me now, she posted her first workout selfie with the words, “I can’t believe I’m doing this. I walked a quarter mile today.”

It’s also about the number 302. That was the number of people who liked her picture by the time I saw it.

It’s also about the number 2. That’s how many more selfies I saw her upload after other workouts during the week.

It’s also about the number 1. That’s how many miles she walked on her third workout.

And, it’s also about the number 4. That’s how many selfies I saw her post in the group before I finally saw her smile a genuine smile as she came to believe in the love and support that she would get when she did so.

The SDLHC.

It’s about the number one.

It’s about the one man who after a month in the group shared no photo, just a plea for encouragement to finally get off his couch and do something after more than seven years of inactivity.

It’s about the number 185. That’s the number of comments that came in on his post cheering him on in the first two hours.

It’s about the number 185. That’s the number of comments that came in on his post in the first two hours that were positive and uplifting and not judgmental.

It’s about the number 4. That’s how many hours it took for this man to post a selfie after his first workout.

It’s also about the number 26. That’s how many pounds this man lost in less than three weeks.

The Single Dad Laughing Health Club.

It’s about the number one.

It’s about the one group of 22 people who met at 9:45 in the morning to complete 15 different circuit stations with the 1 blogger who started the group. All for fun and group encouragement.

It’s also about the three people in the group who stopped and picked up other members on the way just so they could participate.

It’s also about the 22 people who danced, and sang, and cheered each other on, and who made sure that nobody was left behind. It was the 22 people who made sure 22 people finished the entire thing.
