awaking

SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH.

Mmph.

SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH.

“Baby, can you get that?” she said it so sweetly from somewhere miles away.

Mmph. “I’m trying.”

I swatted ferociously at the nightstand, discombobulated, mostly dead.

SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH.

“I’m sorry, I’m trying,” I said. I hit her phone a few times. Nothing. I forced my eyes open out of pure desperation to end whatever was happening. The sound was coming from… the alarm clock? What the hell. Who uses those anymore?

SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH.

Mmph, this time from her. “I think it’s my phone.”

“No, it’s the alarm clock. And I’ve never used it. I don’t know how to turn it off,” I said as I zeroed on the bright number six followed by two zeros. Who, in the f*** gets up this early? I’m not sure if I said it or just thought it really loudly.

“It’s my phone. It’s plugged into the alarm clock.”

“No, it’s coming from the alarm clock speakers!” I was still very much dead, not wanting to give up on sleep just yet. I didn’t have to get up yet. Please, God. I don’t have to get up yet!

SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH. SCREECH.

“Can you hand me my phone?” she said. We were both waking up too much for either one of our comfort level. “It’s my phone not the alarm clock!”
